Document Abstract

Staff shortages and immigration in agriculture

Analyses the nature and determinants of staff shortages in UK agriculture, with a view to advising the government where in the economy there are skilled labour shortages that could be filled by migrant workers from outside the European Economic Area (EEA). Provides an overview of the sector and its labour markets. Assesses: employer demand; labour supply; employment of migrant workers as a recruitment strategy; and whether there is an alternative to immigration in response to shortages of highly skilled workers. Discusses the implications of the findings for analysing staff shortages in the sector.
