Document Abstract

Challenges facing young people (House of Lords Library briefing)

Highlights some of the problems affecting young people in the UK, including a lack of employment opportunities, poverty, a lack of affordable housing, poor physical and mental health, and being more likely to be a victim of crime and to take drugs illegally. Looks at relevant government policies including: a new programme for the provision of employment support for young people seeking work; proposals for a social impact bond programme intended to support young homeless people; plans to increase the provision of mental health care to more children and young people, and plans to develop ‘preventative methods and education to divert more young people from a life of serious and organised crime and reduce reoffending’. Includes statistical information.
