Using behaviour change theory to enhance employability

Explores whether behavioural change theory, or ‘nudge theory’, can be used to change student behaviour in higher education. Describes how policy makers have implemented this theory successfully to alter public behaviour. Argues that an aspect of behavioural change theory – the principle of reciprocity – can successfully impact student career behaviour. Emphasises the importance of the relationship between ‘nudger’ and ‘nudgee’, showing that this needs to be a trusting partnership. Concludes that behavioural change theory is worth utilising in higher education, and is most effective when there are positive relationships between careers advisers and students.
