Looks at issues relating to the application of flexible working practices in the workplace, drawing on the results of surveys of trade union members and other workers. Indicates that, despite improved statutory entitlements to request flexible working, workers with children and those caring for older relatives are finding it difficult to work to their full potential. Discusses specific issues around mothers returning to work and other examples of challenges faced by parents and carers in the workplace. Identifies three key recurring themes that need to be addressed to provide workers with more control and flexibility over their work, and presents recommendations to central government and employers on ways to ensure that flexible working can be made effective.
