Document Abstract

Public sector apprenticeships in England: 2017 to 2018

Reports on whether public bodies are meeting apprenticeship targets set by the UK government up to March 2018. Identifies the target as at least 2.3% of new starts being apprentices between April 2017 and March 2021 in public bodies with over 250 staff in England. Provides data on the first year, showing that 1.4% of new starts were apprentices. Breaks this figure down into sectors, showing that the armed forces recruited a fairly large number of apprentices while the NHS, civil service, and police recruited comparatively few. Highlights the limitations of their quantitative data, and concludes by outlining more detailed follow-on reports in December 2018.
