Document Abstract

Nurturing the next generation (workforce), IN Local Government Chronicle, No 7744 Jul 2019, pp60-61

Explores how to attract and retain talented people in local government senior officer roles. Describes how working in local government, particularly in rural areas, is perceived as being increasingly unattractive due to reforms, political instability, and austerity which have created significant staff retention problems. Highlights protecting learning and development budgets, encouraging innovation, and developing mentoring and coaching programmes as potential ways of attracting young talent. Concludes by exploring how current talent can be retained, emphasising the importance of peer support and reinstating values.
