Older workers: the key issues, IN Labour Research, Vol 108 No 8 Aug 2019, pp16-18

Explores the extent to which the UK government and employers are promoting a supportive environment for an ageing workforce. Describes how the increase in the state pension age has resulted in a significant increase in the number of older women claiming out-of-work benefits. Addresses stereotypes of older workers, highlighting that they are not less productive or more likely to be off sick. Argues that a strategy must be in place to support older people in the workplace, especially regarding caring responsibilities and flexible working. Concludes that the government can no longer ignore this issue, with one third of the UK workforce made up of over-50s and few policies in place to foster hospitable workplaces.
