“You say you’re inclusive…but would you welcome me into your team?” (Transgender people), IN People Management, Oct 2019, pp26-29, 31-32

Reports on the workplace experiences of transgender people who have transitioned, noting that human resource professionals are not only less likely to understand or feel comfortable around them, but could also lead to treating them as second-class employees and even result in bullying or harassment. Suggests that trans people are in a vulnerable position and will tend to leave an organisation rather than tackle discrimination, with many remaining outside the jobs market or feeling they need to hide their status from colleagues. Looks at the practical implications for human resources professionals, including the importance of communication across the organisation, consideration of dress codes, and provision of gender-neutral toilets. Urges businesses to promote trans awareness training and to recognise that recruiters need to become more aware of all their unconscious biases.
