Four paths to our future workforce (recruitment of younger people to local government), IN MJ, 14 Mar 2019, pp18-19

Discusses the problem of recruiting younger people to work in local government. Suggests that if this is not addressed the sector may become a set of aging organisations, unable to command public support for what they do and unable to attract and serve a new generation. Sets out the aging character of councillors and council staff, and proposes that the issue is only partly related to recruitment, it is also about the modernity of organisations. Presents and explores four areas that require attention and, it is argued, provide potential ways forward: understand motivation and purpose in a new and next generation; get behind the redesign of services, and promote systems change; learn from major changes in the field of organisation design; and understand digital, don’t just buy technology.
