Document Abstract

University challenge (financial pressure facing universities), IN Public Finance, No 5 May 2019, pp32-35

Looks at the financial challenges facing the higher education sector across the UK. Outlines the range of pressures facing universities including the failure of tuition fees and grant funding to keep pace with rising costs, a temporary fall in numbers of 18 year olds and the potential impact of Brexit. Suggests that different funding models means that some institutions are better able than others to withstand the current financial challenges but that the chances of a university failing are now greater than at any time in recent decades. Discusses the current review of post-18 education policy in the UK and potential changes in higher education funding arrangements that may result. Looks at the measures being taken by universities to plan to meet current and future challenges including increased marketing and developing innovative learning models.
