Non-standard forms of employment: recent trends and future prospects

Looks at recent trends in temporary contracts, temporary agency work, part-time work, and self-employment; wages and growth of non-standard work; and the phenomenon of digital platform work. Finds that there has been no upward trend in the rate of temporary contracts overall in the EU over the past decade; part-time work continues to grow; there has been a notable increase in very short weekly hours and a rise in involuntary part-time employment; and there has been rapid growth among own-account self-employment in the UK. Considers the implications for working conditions, noting that: while casual work gives high levels of flexibility to employers and can create flexibility for the worker, the evidence points to increased precariousness of contracts, less favourable working conditions, and lower wages compared to regular and permanent employment; while job-sharing provides workers with a good level of flexibility, there are concerns about the loss of benefits associated with full-time work, conflict between job-sharers, and lack of control over the nature and outcomes of work; and that while voucher workers generally experience job insecurity, excessive flexibility, and little guarantee of employment, having a job close to home is considered advantageous particularly for those with childcare responsibilities.
