Document Abstract

Effective performance, development and career conversations at work

Explores ways for managers to have more effective conversations with staff about performance and development. Outlines the role of effective staff performance and development conversations in driving improved organisational performance through alignment/goal setting, constructive feedback, agreed skill/career development action and motivation through individual attention. Considers the ways in which effective conversations can be conducted, highlighting the STAIR approach, and outlines six routes to more effective conversations, including holding more frequent one-to-one conversations, harnessing the power of team discussions and stopping calling conversations difficult. Suggests that such conversations should be treated as an aspect of culture change within organisations.
