Document Abstract

Labour market outlook: views from employers - summer 2018

Analyses survey responses from 1,002 employers in the UK which covers issues such as market trends, employment, skills, recruitment, staff retention, and the impact of Brexit. Shows that employment remains high and there is strong demand for skills and labour. Argues that employers find it difficult to hire for certain positions, with the proportion of hard-to-fill vacancies increasing across the board. Highlights the recent drop in employment for both EU and non-EU citizens in the UK, arguing that this is evidence of a reduction in labour supply. Concludes that there is a pressing need for workforce planning and high performance working. Recommends that employers maintain dialogue with their employees about job security and Brexit while the government works with employers to develop an effective migration strategy.
