Document Abstract

Interventions supporting ethnic minority labour market participation: part one

Reports on ongoing initiatives being implemented by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) designed to encourage better integration of ethnic minorities in the UK labour market. Outlines the methodology, describing how a literature review and semi-structured telephone interviews with Jobcentre staff informed the findings. Argues that provision for ethnic minorities in the Jobcentre varies depending on region. Highlights areas of good practice, such as the effective provision of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) services; engagement with minority communities; and successful up-skilling Jobcentre work coaches. Identifies groups of people who are targeted with tailored support such as ‘stay at home’ ethnic minority women and young black men.
